It’s been a while since I’ve been able to write a Hockey Strength and Conditioning update. Last Wednesday I flew out to Blaine, Minnesota for a few days to help out with the training/testing of the U-18 and O-18 girls at the U.S. Women’s National Development Program camp. It was great spending a few days working alongside Coach Boyle, Anthony Donskov, Chris Pietrzak-Wegner, Dawn Strout, Cal Dietz and Jim Snider. Awesome group of coaches. I flew back Friday and spent the weekend catching up on everything. I’m actually flying up to Maine later today to go to a PRI course with Eric Cressey. Busy time of year!

Chris Pietrzak-Wegner wrote a great article on selecting a quality protein/energy bar. Chris pointed out a lot of the lesser known downfalls of these products and identified specific ingredients to look out for. He also identifies what things you should look for in a quality bar. I know a lot of players tend to lean on these as a post-practice/game meal resource because of how quick/convenient they are. If you fall into this category, I encourage you to read through this article. Parents and coaches need to continue making an educational push away from processed foods and to foods with more natural ingredients (and usually less total ingredients). Darryl Nelson added one of my favorite articles to date. If you don’t know this already, I STRONGLY believe that the idea of “natural ability” or “talent” is GROSSLY over-exaggerated. If you buy into the 10,000 hour rule, I think that, in general, we fail to fully recognize the less obvious factors or forms of practice that create natural ability. For example, the benefits of mental rehearsal are fairly well-established. In other words, visualizing yourself performing a certain skill or movement will result in improvements in that skill or movement. Mental practice is practice. It counts. I think some players are more proactive in this visualization process. On a related note, I think certain players watch hockey games analytically, and apply what they see into their mental rehearsal repertoire so they’re better prepared when they encounter similar situations in their own games. They react more instinctively. It’s practice and it’s highly beneficial, but it’s rarely taught or promoted.

Another less obvious factor contributing to a player’s development is known as the “Relative Age Effect”, which identifies how a player’s birthday may influence their ability to develop in our current system. This was the focus of Darryl’s article, and another thing that everyone from players to administrators in youth hockey should be aware of.

Sean Skahan added the final phase (Phase 5) of his ACL Rehab/Reconditioning program. Now that he’s posted the last phase, I recommend going back through the site and finding all 5 phases, laying them out, and studying the progression. Individual programs hold limited value (not NO value, just limited), but progressions can give you a ton of insight into the rationale behind the reconditioning strategy. This understanding is what will ultimately give you the ability to apply a similar rationale in your own setting.

My friend Cristi Landrigan asked a specific question about a very popular protein powder that her son was taking and Chris chimed in with some great alternative options. Potenza also started a thread on ways to load someone on the ice other than sleds. A few great ideas there too.

I have to run a training session (another decade-long groin pain case that has magically resolved itself with some focused training) in a few minutes so I’m going to keep this short and sweet today.

Plus, I’m probably going to need a few minutes for another Icy Hot bath. Still a bit sore from Wednesday’s lift:

On to this week’s content…

Darryl Nelson added an AWESOME video from Dr. Steven Norris from one of the ADM seminars. I’ve said in the past that USA Hockey is doing all the right things right now with their American Development Model; they have all the right people providing information to their organization. Every time I get access to one of these videos I watch it 3-4 times and take notes throughout. I’m only about 20 minutes in to this one, but I can already tell it’s one of the most-see videos.

A few of the messages that really stood out to me so far:

“Every idiot, including me, can organize a competitive schedule. That tells you NOTHING about the program.”

This really speaks to the marketing strategies some youth and tournament programs use and highlights the need to look at what coaches are doing to DEVELOP players, not just showcase them.

“Be patient while all hell breaks lose during puberty.”

I’m becoming known now for saying that testing youth is a senseless practice and shouldn’t be done. Whether we’re talking about hockey performance or overall athleticism, the fact is that every kid is going to develop at different rates and the adolescent years are especially volatile in this regard. This is ANOTHER reason why players shouldn’t get discouraged if they don’t make the PeeWee team they want. You see a lot of dominant peewees (U-12) that are mediocre midgets (U-18); early developers stand out at young ages. Keep doing the right things and you’ll win out over the long run.

I have a lot of notes (already), but one of the ideas that jumped out at me was that for the first 10 years of life, kids learn best through demonstration, and even better when this demonstration is performed by someone in close proximity age-wise to their peer group. In other words, a 10-year old will learn better from watching a 12-year old demonstrate or perform than he would from watching Ovechkin or Crosby. This is probably why so many athletes benefit from having an older sibling that is competitive in the same sport, and highlights an idea I’ve been pushing on you for years-GO WATCH GAMES AT THE NEXT LEVEL! Whether it’s a Tier II player watching a Tier I game at the same age level or a Tier I player watching a Tier I game at the next age level, the important thing is that players are getting exposure to what lies ahead. It’s not just about preparation; it’s about idea generation, and mental rehearsal.

Sean Skahan added Phase 2 of his ACL Rehab program to the site. Always great to see what someone with Sean’s experience is doing to bring a player back from one of these injuries. Seeing “return to play” programs can also shed some light on things we can do to avoid the injuries from occurring in the first place.

Sean Skahan added Phase 1 of his ACL Rehab training program. I’ve been reading up on ACL research this week because Endeavor has partnered with a local youth Soccer organization. As you know, ACLs plague soccer players and are often career-limiting injuries. Anything we can do from a strength and conditioning standpoint to improve the athlete’s likelihood of competing at their pre-injury level after surgery is a life changing opportunity. We also added a couple videos. Darryl Nelson added videos of two Olympic Lift variations that he uses with the NTDP. He also points out that the players in one of the videos are goalies…Yes…goalies need to lift too.

Mike Potenza added a few exercises to help restore function and balance across the hip joint. In my opinion, having multiple exercises in your “toolbox” that serve a similar function is a great way to add variation in your programs (at least in the athlete’s mind) without neglecting the necessary creation of stress to certain structures/patterns. Mike shows a couple exercises using a somewhat specialized piece of equipment, but these could also be done with a slideboard and some resistance bands.

There are also some great forum discussions that you should check out. If you’re in charge of making equipment purchases for a training facility, you’ll want to read up on the thread that’s shedding some light on the differences between the Woodway Curve and Woodyway Force.

Jim Reeves has posted some enlightening comments in response to a question from a member asking what he should do for his players to stay in good shape for a tournament they have 3 or 4 weeks after the season ends. I face a pretty similar situation in that a lot of our athletes finish the season and immediately want to prepare for tryouts. It’s a difficult thing to balance actively reversing some of the negative adaptations of the season while also continuing to prepare them for a hockey-related assessment.

Lastly, Mike Potenza started a thread on an interesting assessment designed to assess neural fatigue in athletes. This piqued my interest because of my background in exercise neuroscience and because I had no idea such a concept existed. I’ll be interested to read more about this in the future and look into it for our guys here.
